Metta Center for Nonviolence
“Nonviolence is not about putting a different person in power; it’s about revealing a different power in people.”

- Prof. Michael Nagler

Metta’s mission is to promote the understanding and use of nonviolence worldwide. In fulfillment of this mission we work both with those directly affected by or involved in projects to alleviate violence and those who contribute to the paradigm shift in culture from competition to cooperation and violence to nonviolence throughout the social system. Increasingly, in recent years, the core principle of our efforts has been the uplifting of the human image, in service of which we emphasize four key truths:

•Life is sacred; nothing that degrades or inhibits the fulfillment of another should or need be tolerated. As science is now saying, and the wisdom tradition has always said, life has a profound purpose which every one of us can discover and serve.

•Life is an interconnected whole; despite appearances (and the imagery of the mass media), we can never injure another without injuring ourselves; indeed, as Martin Luther King said, “I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be” and vice versa.

•Fulfillment never comes from consuming things but from deepening and extending relationships — with one another, fellow creatures, the life-sustaining planet.

•Security never comes from killing “enemies” or warehousing “criminals” but from turning opponents into friends and restoring offenders to society and dignity.

Our long-term goal is nothing less than to substantially influence the coming paradigm shift and to assure that it embrace principled nonviolence as a central strategy and value. To that end, Metta’s programmatic outreach extends from basic consciousness-raising about the principles and theory of nonviolence and the human image it implies to practical implementation of the appropriate strategies in key areas of change.
